Adult Mental Health Services (AMHS)
The Adult Mental Health (MH) service program of North Metropolitan Area Health Service (NMAHS) Mental Health provides inpatient, rehabilitation and community services through hospital inpatient units, rehabilitation centres and community clinics across the north metropolitan area.
Our mission is to create an environment where individuals, their families, communities, and services work together to improve the quality of life and wellbeing of all individuals in our care.
Services provided
Services provided by the Adult program are targeted at people 18 and 65 years of age with mental illness. Inpatient units provide voluntary and involuntary short-term inpatient management of adults during an acute phase of mental illness until sufficient recovery allows the person to be treated effectively in a community-based setting. Inpatient care is also provided for those patients who have long-term mental illness who are unable to cope within the range of community supported services.
NMAHS Mental Health adult community clinical services provide a wide range of community services, including:
- Emergency and non-urgent psychiatric services to adults aged 18 to 65 years who have a mental illness.
- Mental Heath consultation, urgent and non-urgent assessments.
- Multidisciplinary community rehabilitation services for the individual’s mental illness.
The goal of treatment is to work collaboratively with clients, families, carers and other organisations to improve health outcomes for these individuals.
Referrals to community services
Referrals to community mental health services can be made by individuals (self-referral), general practitioners, general hospitals and psychiatrists.
